Make Your Own Wrapping Paper

We had some down time today so I got out some red wrapping paper, green paint & a Christmas tree shaped sponge and let Riley go to town making her own wrapping paper. Once it was dry we wrapped all of daddy's presents in the homemade wrapping paper. This is a cheap way to make a present more special for family members.

*If you don't have a Christmas shaped sponge you could also take a kitchen sponge and cut it into a circle to make an ornament shape or use a cookie cutter to trace another shape into the sponge.

Ideas for a Letter from Santa

A few nights ago Riley (with my help) wrote her letter to Santa. Two of the three items she asked for are toys she made up, as in they don't exist. Hopefully she won't be too disappointed on Christmas morning! Our local library has a mailbox you can deliver your Santa letters to and they will write you back from Santa. So check your local library and see if they offer the same thing. Also some local post offices still have a Santa letter mailbox.

If you don't have any local places that will send a letter from Santa to your children, you can use this Santa Clause letterhead I found and make you own magic from Santa. You can download it here for free.

Here are some other sites I found that you can print a letter from Santa for free. Just don't get caught sneaking it in your mailbox:)

Just imagine your children's face when they open their letter from Santa! I love making Christmas magic for my kids!

Christmas Book Advent Calendar

I have seen the Christmas Book Advent Calendar idea all over the blogsphere. In case you haven't seen the idea here is how it works:
  • You gather 24 Christmas-themed children's books (if you don't own 24 Christmas-themed books you can trade with friends & family or check them out from the library)
  • Wrap each book separately
  • You number them from 1 to 24 and stick them under your Christmas tree
  • Starting December 1st your children open a book each night to be read for their bedtime story
I really like this idea since we try to read as many Christmas books as we can in December and this will make sure we get a lot in. The only thing I didn't like about this idea was having to spend the time wrapping 24 books (don't I wrap enough in the month of December?) and wasting all that wrapping paper. So I decided to make my own drawstring bag that the Christmas book elves can put a new book in every day. This way it saves me time and I can use it every year, win-win! If you have children who aren't into reading much this would be a great idea to get them excited about it!

Here is a list of some books we will be reading this year:
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus by Chris Plehal
The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore and Cheryl Harness
Olivia Helps with Christmas by Ian Falconer
Fancy Nancy's Splendiferous Christmas by Jane O'Connor
The Polar Express
Mooseltoe by Margie Palatini
Little Porcupine's Christmas by Joseph Slate
Christmas Night Fair and Bright by Julie Stiegemeyer
Cookies for Santa by Cecelia Slater
The Spirit of Christmas by Nancy Tillman
The Berenstain Bears meet Santa Bear by Stan & Jan Berenstain

This list is only half of what I need so I will be hunting for some more good titles. Does anybody have any favorite books they want to share?

Thankful Memory Cards

This year I am starting a new tradition for Thanksgiving. We have so many traditions for Christmas but very few for Thanksgiving. I made Thankful Memory Cards to use to write down every year what my children are thankful for. To make these I used my handy Cricut and cut out large tags with fall colored cardstock. Then I used this free printable and glued it on the tags. At the top of the tag I put Riley's name and year and then listed the things she has told me she is thankful for this year. I printed several tags for future years and attached them with twine. As my kids get older this will be a easy way to look back at what they were thankful for.

Thanks to Sissy Print for the free printable!

$7 for 2 Fandango Movie Tickets

Are you planning to go to the movies this holiday season? There are some cute kid movies coming out between now and Christmas. Our family is planning on going to Arthur Christmas this weekend and I just came across this great deal on movie tickets! There is only three of us in our family and it still cost $25+ to go to the movies if we plan on paying full price. We try to never do that though because there is always a deal out there.

MSN Offers has one of the best deals I've seen lately on movie tickets. Today's National deal is for $12 you get 2 Fandango.com tickets. If you order through this link you get $5 off your first purchase making the tickets only $7. The code for the tickets does expire Jan. 12 so you will want to make sure you will use it before then.
